Here are some of the common types of skateboard ramps. Know their difference, purpose, and what makes them unique.
These are probably one of the simplest types of skateboard ramps. They are usually used on driveways. Only measures about 2 feet and don’t have a lot of concave. This can be made of different materials, such as plastic, wooden, or metal.
Keep in mind that metal ramps can get very hot in the summer. Alternatively, plastic ramps can easily get slippery when wet. However, why should you skate in the rain, anyway? Wedge ramps are the best option for beginners.
As your skill improves, you can also combine them with rails, boxes, and other types of bigger ramps.
Launch Skateboard Ramps
Also known as “kicker ramps”, launch ramps are the most basic types of ramps. They look more like wedge ramps, however, they are more concave. They are designed to provide you with more air than a common inclined plane. They generally have a gradual slope.
This type of skateboard ramps lets you enjoy sufficient lift for moderate flip tricks. Launch skateboard ramps are also perfect for gap setups. This can allow you to do some tricks between two kickers over a gap.
Just as with wedge ramps, launch ramps are made using varying materials. They can also be paired with boxes, rails, ledges, and other types of ramps to create your own unique park at home.
Wave Skateboard Ramps
These are known as wave ramps due to its consistent rising and falling shape. The pinnacles and valleys of a wave ramp can help you control your speed while performing your tricks. Additionally, any skater can do his combo tricks which require most rotations.
Box jumps comprise of two launch skateboard ramps which are placed on two opposite sides. It includes a flat plane or surface in the center that links these two skateboard ramps together.
Most flatland skaters choose box jumps than other types of ramps since transition can be done easily. You can do flip tricks and manuals quickly on the same ramp. Skaters have the chance to chain together various trick combos.
Spines Skateboard Ramps
Spines are composed of two-quarter pipes which are placed back to back. It has slopes on both sides which can help a skater in changing from one side to the other while in midair or mid-trick. You won’t lose your momentum. This is very significant especially when you are in the middle of a run.
Quarter pipes are a very common type of home skateboard ramp. Best of all, they are much cheaper. They are also available in different brands. Quarter pipes are typically made up of curved ramps. Skaters can grab some air while they are launched upwards.
Quarter pipes are great since they can provide you with a controlled space for grabbing some air. This is an excellent ramp for a transition grind. A perfect choice if you are doing quick grabs and other air tricks that needs focus and control.
Skaters prefer these types of ramps for quick grinds while they are in the middle of a run.
Vert Ramps for Skateboarding
Vert ramps may look the same with quarter pipes, however, they include an additional built at the top. This extension is an assurance that a skater won’t cross over the edge of the ramp. With this type of ramp, you can safely land back on the angle where you launched from.
Half pipes are formed when two pieces of quarter pipes are combined together. This is the best choice if you need a controlled space where you can consistently move back and forth between these 2 quarter pipes.
This will give you more speed, allows you to grab some air and give you the chance to do some tricks every time you are up on a side of the ramp. Half pipes are actually what comes to mind when people think of “skateboard ramps”.
Half pipes are a bit expensive, however, they are perfect for performing great tricks. They have the best size and flexibility.
They are named as such due to their shape. Typically, they have a similar look with an in-ground swimming pool. Skaters who ride into bowls can instantly gain speed and grab some air. Rest assured that you won’t land on flat ground or in a space without a quarter pipe.

- 1 – 4×8, 1/4″ masonite
- 4 – 2×4’s, 8′ long lumber
- 1 – 1lb box of 1 5/8″ screws
- 1 – 1lb box of 2 1/2″ screws
- 1 – 1′ × 2′-6, 3/16″ steel
step-by-step instructions on building a ramp:
Step One: Cut the lumber into 10 pieces of 2×4’s to 2′-4 1/2.
Step Two: For the plywood, cut them in the following sizes.
- 1 pc 3/8″ Ply = 1′-5 3/8 × 2′-6
- 1 pc 3/8″ Ply = 1′-4 1/4 × 2′-6
- 2 pcs 3/8″ Ply = 2′-6 × 4′-0
- 1 pc 1/4″ Masonite = 2′-6 × 4′-6 3/4
For the 3/4″ Plywood, follow this diagram and do the same on the other side. Both sides must be the same.
Step Three: In order to assemble your ramp, use screws and affix the 2×4’s on the bottom, top, and front. It would be easier if you can get somebody to help you.
Step Four: Fasten the remaining 2×4’s and follow the spacing below.
Step Five: Attach the bottom layer using 1′-4 1/4 × 2′-6 sheet of 3/8″ plywood. Make sure that your screws are placed exactly into the 2×4’s.
Step Six: Attach the 4′-0 × 2′-6 sheets of 3/8″ plywood as a flush to the previous 3/8″ sheet.
Step Seven: Attach the middle layer and masonite. Screw the other 4′-0 × 2′-6 sheets of 3/8″ plywood starting at the top.
Step Eight: Next, attach the last 1′-5 3/8 × 2′-6 sheet of 3/8″ using screws. Follow the previous pattern.
Step Nine: Place the 2′-6 × 4′-6 3/4 sheet of masonite on top of the surface.
